Short draughts—long swallows, men; 'tis hot as Satan's hoof

I'd advise all casual perusers of blogs who might have happened upon this page to click over to Karl before sinisterly melting back into the pervy Internet fug you may have appeared from. 2009, like 2008, sees Karl bravely struggle with the Herculean task of reviewing his top albums of the previous year without falling prey to a fickle electronic calendar which, as we all know, gives more of a shite about fads than genuine criticism. One of my favourite Internet pastimes is to keep abreast of Karl as he staunchly types page after carefully considered page of well-thought criticism. And who gives a shit if it comes a month or two after the herd? It's brilliant you see. I also have reason to believe that he is fuelled by a diet of horrendously sugary drinks, so read him while he actually has teeth to sink into the albums he reviews.

Of Montreal played the Button factory tonight. I'll wager that I, and others, will get at least two phone calls or texts later. One might read "That was the greatest heap of self-indulgent bum-juice to which I ever bore witness". The other might state something along the lines of...
"Ohmyfuckinggodofmontrealhowcomeineversawthemlivebefore
...howcometheyarenotthebiggestbandintheworld?"

I look at Kevin Barnes and I really do not know him. I can't establish if I even understand the cut of his jib, never mind if I like it. Like, what makes him tick, and should we really care for a man of his age acting so wilfully, indulgently, odd? Yet, from time to time an odd lyric and melody of his combine and manage a successful sideways stab at a sublime, slippery thought or feeling I've harboured. Sometimes, Of Montreal knock the wind out of me. I'm sure that if I get married, divorced and subsequently become bisexual I'll probably start to understand the rest of their canon.

If you were at this gig, please report below.

I was there! truly was quite odd, esp. in the costume department.

having said that, I tend to have no problem getting over mental costumery and silly am-dram stage shows, though, as long as the music is good... but I think a few of the audience weren't quite so happy with it.

fwiw -- I'm a massive fan of their last album, sucked in by the brilliance of "The Past Is A Grotesque Animal" (like many). not sure if I'm so keen on the musical direction he's going, though, based on that gig. :(

I only like one Of Montreal song and you posted it.
I've tried to like them. Then realized I was trying and gave up.
I prefer B.P Helium's solo stuff like Kumquat Mae.

I was there too. It was mental, but in the best possible way. I didn't realise how poppy they were - I loved it.

Well, Justin, at least it sounds interesting and Lauren seems to think it was great! I'm kinda disappointed I wasnt there.
I was at an Of Montreal gig once but it was at the end of a four day bender in Barcelona and all the rotating wheelie background effects made me feel like my soul was collapsing. Jiffy, you were there too.
And Lolo, so were you. You smashed a door on an angry Spanish girl's fingers. A dark and chaotic night on los ramblas.

Scarlet for me...

Yeah, the calendar is no barrier though. And I'm about a month ahead of last year's pace.

The gig was a weird one... I know it's not really for the casual onlooker to complain that a singer isn't really FEELING his lyrics, but it really is all a stage-show. There are really heavy, heady songs that he sings with the same eyebrow-raised, nearly naked tone.

Which is great when it's the type of song that bears it. If it's not (and Cato As A Pun might be a good example) then it's sort of missing out on both worlds.

Couldn't go cos I was sick, so my ticket is still intact. A memento of a night out that never was. I saw them in the summer in Victoria Park - amazing gig. That was before Skeletal Lamping and it was all the better for it.

I wonder how many people went in the hope that he'd get the old "meat and two veg" out?

Well, Karl, did the meat and two veg come out?? Those pictures are fucking nuts.

There's a vid of a stripped-down version of one of their songs knocking around now. I can't remember which, but I do recall thinking it was great.
